Security For Our NEFCU Members

We all agree, for many of us convenience services are a must and have become a part of our daily lives. Whether accessing the web from a desktop computer or a mobile device, it is important to remember that these conveniences come with risk for hackers, scammers, and other predators. The security of your account is the top priority for Nebraska Energy Federal Credit Union (NEFCU). Our fraud prevention systems constantly monitor your accounts for suspicious activity.

We want to remind members to be cautious of unexpected communications claiming to be from the credit union. NEFCU will never call, email, or text members asking for account numbers, credit or debit card numbers, PIN, usernames, or passwords. Do not respond to or click on links contained in suspicious text or emails. Instead, we ask that you contact the credit union at 800-453-3913.

Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly review statements (account and credit card) for questionable activity. If you notice anything that appears unusual, report it to the credit union immediately.

Update Your Passwords: Use strong and unique passwords for each online account. Strong passwords should contain a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.

Account Alerts: Set up alerts to notify you of activity on your account. NEFCU Platinum Credit Card alerts can be set up within eZCard Account Access. Members can also set up account alerts within Online Banking by clicking the Manage Alerts link.

Place a Fraud Alert on Your Credit Report
Place a Fraud Alert: A fraud alert is a warning placed on your credit report. This alerts creditors to verify your identity before opening accounts or extending credit in your name. You can request a fraud alert by contacting any one of the three credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). Once you place an alert with one bureau, the other two bureaus will be notified, and your alert will appear on all three of your credit reports. Fraud alerts remain in place for one year and can be renewed if necessary.   Equifax Fraud Alert ,  Experian Fraud Alert ,  TransUnion Fraud Alert
Place a Credit Freeze on Your Credit Report
Place a Credit Freeze: A credit freeze locks your credit report and prevents creditor access. Freezing your credit helps prevent unauthorized access to your credit report and makes it difficult for new accounts to be opened in your name. A credit freeze does not expire - it remains in place until you remove it. To place a credit freeze you are required to contact the bureaus individually:   Equifax Credit Freeze ,  Experian Credit Freeze , TransUnion Credit Freeze
ATM Security
Safety Tips:
  • Never write your Personal Identification Number on your card.
  • Always use an ATM that is well lit and not obstructed from view.
  • Protect your PIN and privacy by shielding the keypad and standing close to the machine.
  • Be cautious — ensure no one is loitering in the area when you approach the ATM.
  • Do not accept assistance from strangers.
  • Do not use ATMs with unusual signage or instructions. Check for skimming device*.
  • Have your card ready.
  • If you are followed after leaving an ATM, go to a crowded, well-lit area and call the police.
  • Once your transaction is complete, put cash directly into your wallet or purse and leave the area. Verify your cash later when it is safe to do so.
  • Monitor your accounts regularly and reconcile your ATM receipts to your statements. Report any unauthorized transactions.
*How to Spot ATM Skimming Devices
ATMs are vulnerable to skimming devices. Skimming devices have a magnetic strip called a “skimmer” that is placed over the slot where you insert your ATM card. This “skimmer” allows someone to collect your account information. Once the information is collected, the scammer can recreate your card and drain your account. These attacks tend to be in high-traffic areas, such as malls and gas stations but stand-alone machines are also targets.
We encourage members to take a good look at the machine. If the front of the machine appears to be altered, damaged, or parts are loose walk away.
